United Church of Christ

The United Church of Christ (UCC) was founded in 1957 with the merger of the Evangelical and Reformed Church and the Congregational Christian Churches.  With the blending of various backgrounds of these churches, the UCC is one of the most diverse Christian Churches in the U.S.

The United Church of Christ believes in the authority of the scriptures; doctrinal freedom; Christian unity; God: Jesus who is the only head of the Church; the Holy Spirit, salvation, bearing witness, and serving others.

The structure of the UCC is based on the local congregation, with no official hierarchy managing local affairs.  Christ is the only acknowledged leader of the UCC.  The members of each congregation manage their churches affairs, including worship, education and mission.  The individual congregations work together through Associations, which are groups of local churches that work together to ordain ministers and set Association rules and procedures.  Associations are grouped together to form the 39 conferences in the U.S.  The General Synod speaks for the whole UCC and oversees its worldwide work.

Formal affiliations.
